President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday launched a new Electric Tricycle Empowerment Initiative, aimed at reducing transportation costs by 40 percent, creating jobs for Nigerian youths, and promoting a cleaner environment.

The launch, held in Abuja, was convened by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development in partnership with House of Destiny Global Services Ltd. and the National Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association (NATOMORAS).

Speaking through the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Mohammed Dingyadi, President Tinubu said the initiative aligns with the government’s energy transformation programme, which seeks to reduce carbon emissions and foster a healthier environment for future generations.

“The electric tricycles will reduce transportation costs by 40 percent and provide a cleaner alternative to fossil-fuel-powered vehicles,” the president said.

He added that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Youth Development, will continue to roll out programmes that create jobs for youths while supporting the global shift toward sustainable energy solutions.

Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, described the initiative as a direct response to both youth unemployment and the global call for green energy.

“We are not just giving out tricycles; we are investing in a clean and profitable initiative that ensures a decent economic future for thousands of families. This programme addresses three critical challenges at once: it creates jobs for riders, mechanics, and charging station operators,” he said.

Olawande noted that the electric tricycles eliminate petrol costs, increase operators’ take-home income, and significantly reduce carbon emissions, contributing to cleaner cities.

“The transition to Electric Vehicles (EVs) is a global trend, and Nigerian youths will not be left behind. We are putting them in the driver’s seat of the future,” he said.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader agenda to empower youths, promote green energy, and foster economic growth while supporting the national transition to sustainable and cleaner transportation solutions.
