President Bola Tinubu will attend and address world leaders at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York in September.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, disclosed this on Wednesday after a meeting with the president at the State House, Abuja.

He said Tinubu confirmed his participation while approving Nigeria’s plans for this year’s General Assembly.

“The president has given us his word. He will attend the UN General Assembly this September,” Ibrahim said.

He said Tinubu will participate in several high-level side events focusing on energy, education and hospital management.

He said the president would use the gathering to present Nigeria’s ongoing economic and governance reforms to the international community.

Tinubu attended the 78th UN General Assembly in person, while Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented him at the 79th and 80th sessions.

Ibrahim added that the president would also engage world leaders on strengthening border policing in West Africa to address growing security threats linked to porous borders.

He said Nigeria is already working with the UN on a regional border policing initiative and would seek wider international support during the meeting.

The 81st UN General Assembly will open on September 8, while the general debate, where heads of state and government deliver their addresses, will take place from September 22 to 28.

The annual gathering will bring together world leaders to discuss key global issues, including climate change, sustainable development, international peace and security.
