The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritise local refining and support increased crude oil allocation to the Dangote Refinery to boost domestic fuel production and achieve energy self-sufficiency.
The students made the appeal during a peaceful demonstration in Abuja on Wednesday, which began at Millennium Park and ended at the Unity Fountain.
Addressing journalists, NAPS President, Comrade Eshiofune Oghayan, described the Dangote Refinery as a significant milestone for Nigeria’s industrial and economic development.
“For decades, our nation relied on exporting crude and importing refined products. Today, we see renewed hope in local refining capacity that can help restore economic independence,” he said.
Oghayan commended President Tinubu’s focus on education and youth empowerment and expressed optimism that his administration would promote policies to strengthen local production in the oil and gas sector.
He urged the federal government to prioritise crude supply for domestic refineries to reduce fuel importation, stabilize prices, and enhance energy security.
“The Nigerian government should consider allocating more crude to local refineries so that we can refine more at home, meet local demand, and stabilise the economy,” he said.
The students also commended industrialist Aliko Dangote for his investment in the energy sector and encouraged young Nigerians to support homegrown innovation and industries.
“The soul of a nation is not measured by its GDP, but by the strength of its will. When the youth rise to defend productivity, the nation itself will stand tall,” the NAPS President added.
