Niger Tornadoes kicked off their 2025/26 NPFL campaign in style, edging past Nasarawa United 1-0 in a tense rescheduled Match Day One clash at the Kwara Sports Complex, Ilorin yesterday in a north central derby.

From the first whistle, both sides signalled intent with high pressing and sharp exchanges in midfield. Tornadoes looked brighter going forward, and their persistence paid off midway through the first half when Terdoo Shimagande latched onto a loose ball inside the box and slotted home calmly to give the hosts the lead.

Nasarawa United responded immediately, forcing Tornadoes’ goalkeeper into a fine save following a long-range effort. The visitors continued to press for an equaliser but found Tornadoes’ backline resolute. The first half closed with Tornadoes defending their slender advantage.

After the restart, the tempo intensified. Tornadoes nearly doubled their lead on the hour mark when Okoye threaded a delightful pass to Sarki, only for the striker to be flagged offside. The hosts then opted for fresh legs, with Kufre Ebong replacing Shimagande in the 84th minute to add energy upfront.

As the clock ticked towards full time, Nasarawa United piled on the pressure, launching waves of attack. Tornadoes were pinned back in their half, but they held firm, with crucial interceptions and disciplined defending keeping the visitors at bay.

Five minutes of added time brought further drama, yet Tornadoes’ composure under pressure ensured they preserved their lead.

At the final whistle, it was relief and jubilation for the hosts, who began their season with a crucial victory.
