Tottenham, Cambridge Utd, Abzchain Resources FC unite in Abuja to unearth future stars
The football field of Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja have come alive this week as Abzchain Resources FC, in partnership with Tottenham Hotspur FC and Cambridge United FC, kicked off a five-day scouting program aimed at discovering and nurturing the next wave of football talent in Nigeria.
The initiative, which began on Monday, October 27 and expected to end on Friday, October 31, brings together experienced scouts and coaches from England alongside local football experts — all united by one goal: to identify and develop exceptional young players between the ages of 12 and 19.
For Mr. Francis Abiola, Head Consultant at Abzchain Resources FC, the program represents more than just a football event — it’s an investment in human potential.
“The aim and objective of what we’re doing is to help those that have potential to harness it. We want to give them an open opportunity to display their market — because every player is a brand. This is real business, real investment in human capacity,” Abiola said.
He added that Abzchain Resources FC, a sports management and scouting outfit, has long believed in the abundance of untapped football quality in Nigeria.
“We believe that the people who came here came because they see what we’re doing — and they trust that we can produce quality players who can compete anywhere in the world,” he noted.
From the English side, Ryan Hervel, former Wimbledon FC player and current Tottenham Hotspur coach, emphasized that the program is not just about spotting talent but about providing real opportunities for growth.
“We’re here to watch, assess, and support Francis in what he’s doing — providing young players with opportunities. We’re highlighting individuals who might have potential to move further within Europe or England,” Hervel explained.
Hervel noted that several players had already stood out for their technical ability and awareness on the pitch.
Also present was Emmanuel N’Daw, ex-Cambridge United player and coach, who offered a keen eye for detail in player behaviour and off-the-ball intelligence.
“Some parts of the game have been really good. What we’re looking for isn’t just what players do with the ball — it’s also about their body language, their movement, and their willingness to help the team without the ball,” N’Daw said. “Those are the small things that make a big difference.”
