The Chief Executive Officer, Kafam Agro- Allied Company, Ilorin, AlhajiAdamuAbdulOthman, made this observation while talking with newsmen in Ilorin. He noted that many farmers could not go into mechanised farming because of poverty.
“The way forward, I believe, is to embrace tractor and implements hiring so that planting can be made easier and buoyant harvest would be recorded thereafter,” he said.
Othman, who imports tractors and farming equipment, however, also urged farmers to diversify in crop planting for high yields.
He said: “Changing from one crop to another helps return fertility to the soil and it would allow for crop productivity.
“A particular nutrient lacking in soil in one season could be useful for another type of crop the next season, depending on its requirement,” he also said.
He urged farmers to learn to plant at the appropriate time to make the best of various opportunities afforded them by government and institutions towards attaining development.
“Our farmers plant late and sometimes disregard global warning which in most cases comes to pass,”Othman noted.
