Traders at the famous Terminus Market in Jos, Plateau State, have lamented over how the market’s environment has been turned into a dumping ground by residents.

The traders said the market was now unattractive for business due to the huge refuse that had been dumped there.

City & Crime reports that the market was in 2002 destroyed following a midnight fire, after which the state government asked its occupants to vacate, a situation that caused residents of the area to turn the market into a dumping ground.

A food vendor in the market, Loveth Geoffrey, said people found it difficult to patronise them because of the dirty nature of the market environment.

She said, “Some people want to come and eat, but because of the environment, they cannot eat.

Also speaking, Hassan Musa Hudu, who sells second-hand clothes, said it was disgusting how people indiscriminately dumped refuse in the market, pointing out that, “If you look at the sideways of our shops, people urinate there and the smell is not good.”

Meanwhile, despite declaring a state of emergency on environmental sanitation in Jos North and Bukuru metropolis by Governor Caleb Muftwang, the refuse dumped in the area is yet to be evacuated.
