Transport fare has increased by 50 per cent in Nasarawa State. Commuters at Lafia Central Motor Park said fares went up after Governor Abdullahi Sule proclaimed restriction on movement in the 12 local government areas and a lockdown on Karu local government area.
A commuter, Salisu Shabu, said: “The park is full of passengers, but the hike is bad at this time of economic downturn due to the measures taken by the state government to contain the spread of coronavirus in the state. The fare from Lafia to Makurdi has risen from N600 to N900.”
Most of the commuters appealed to the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to reduce the transport fare in the interest of people in the state.
When contacted, Chairman of NURTW, Nasarawa State Council, Alhaji Salihu Adamu, said the union did not increase fares.
