The Registrar and Chief Executive of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Prof. Olusegun Josiah Ajiboye, has berated proprietors of private schools for recruiting unqualified and unregistered teachers to teach in their schools.

Ajiboye, who spoke at the NAPPS Best Teachers’ Awards celebration, in Abuja, said the practice has affected the country’s education system.

“It is important to note that a large number of unqualified, unregistered, unlicensed teachers are recruited to teach in private schools across the nation,” he said.

Represented by the Deputy Director in the council, Ajiboye described the practice as heartbreaking and one that has devastating effects on the country’s education system.

He emphasised the importance of education of youth to the future of the country saying that no country could develop without properly educating its youth.

He said a lot of damage was done to the country by unqualified teachers teaching in any school.

Ajiboye enumerated some of the negative effects of the practice to include: imparting wrong knowledge and skills to the learners, high rate of dropouts from schools and poor performance in external examinations among others.

He urged all stakeholders to put efforts and chase away what he called quacks from the classrooms so as to raise the standard of education.
