The coordinator of the Rule of Law Foundation, Mr J.B. Daudu (SAN), has said that the justice sector is facing unjust interference in judicial proceedings, causing hindrance to fight against corruption.
Daudu made the claim at a workshop held by the organisation titled: “The role of the legal profession in the enthronement of the rule of law, due process and constitutional governance.”
He said that there was an “unsubstantiated allegation of communal corruption against the judiciary” by the executive arm, adding that the accusation was, “merely to cow the judiciary so that it will condone all the unethical and high handed mode of the anti-corruption crusade.”
He said that anti-corruption war must be fought in accordance with due process and rules in the 1999 Constitution.
He decried “trial by propaganda” and interfering with court proceedings of former government’s members before a verdict is returned.
He said that the foundation supported the president’s anti-corruption crusade, regretting what he described as “disobedience of court order,” and “judgments taken for granted” as examples of government preventing the court from functioning properly.
He added that the judicial body can affectively perform their duties if government branches refrained from interfering with the judgment process.
He called on judges to stay away from acts of corruption and uphold integrity and their oaths to office.
Also speaking at the workshop was Prof. Namdi Aduba who said that a corruption-free society will only exist when everybody followed the rule of law.
He called on the government to listen to minority voices in order to enthrone good governance.
