Troops Kill Insurgents, Recover Arms in Niger

Troops of the 22 Armoured Brigade, operating under Operation Park Strike V, in conjunction with Park Rangers, have killed an unspecified number of insurgents in Kainji Lake National Park, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The operation also led to the recovery of 3 AK-47 rifles and 4 motorcycles from the insurgents.

Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, Captain Stephen Nwankwo, in a statement confirming the development also said that one of the Park Rangers sustained gunshot injuries but has since been stabilised.

The operation was part of the ongoing efforts to clear Kainji Lake National Park (KLNP) of criminal elements terrorizing  area.

He added that the success was recorded  in the early hours of Thursday, September 25, 2025, when the joint security operatives ambushed the insurgents at the Kainji National Park.

He said, “In continuation of the ongoing efforts to clear Kainji Lake National Park (KLNP) of criminal elements causing insecurity in the area, troops of 22 Armoured Brigade, operating under Operation Park Strike V, in conjunction with Park Rangers, conducted a successful ambush operation in the early hours of Thursday, 25 September 2025.

“Acting on credible intelligence, the troops staged an ambush at identified insurgents’ crossing point in Tungan Talle, Zugurma Section of the park at about 1:15 a.m. The operation was aimed at disrupting hostile movement and inflicting maximum casualties on the adversary.

“During the encounter, troops engaged the insurgents with superior firepower, neutralising an unconfirmed number, while others sustained injuries. The operation led to the recovery of 3 AK-47 rifles and 4 motorcycles. Unfortunately, one Park Ranger sustained a gunshot wound during the fight, but has since been stabilised.

“Commending the gallant troops, the Commander 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, who has relocated to the Step-Up Headquarters at Wawa Cantonment for effective coordination, praised their resilience and professionalism. He encouraged them to maintain the momentum of operations and reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to eliminating criminal elements in its Area of Responsibility (AOR), while ensuring the safety of law-abiding citizens.

“The Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its constitutional mandate to defend the nation against all threats. It will continue to work in synergy with other securities agencies and stakeholders to ensure lasting peace and security within its AOR”, he added.
