Truck crushes 2 undergraduates in Ekiti

Two undergraduates of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) have been crushed to death by a truck in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The students, 25-year-old Ojo Hezekiah Abidemi and Ojo Ayomide, 21, were pursuing a degree programme of the UNN affiliated to the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti.

Witnesses told our correspondent yesterday that Abidemi and

Ayomide were planning to travel to Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Sunday evening, to meet their parents when the accident happened.

One witness said, “The two students were on a commercial motorcycle going to Akure when the motorcycle collided with a truck. They died on the spot.

“The motorcycle had stopped over to buy fuel at a petrol station. But as it was connecting the road, a moving truck on a high speed overran it and killed the two students instantly. It took the intervention of spirited individuals to stop some rampaging youths from setting the truck ablaze.”

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, Assistant Superintendent Sunday Abutu, said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that it was a case of collision. We appeal to motorists and other road users to always exercise restraint on roads. We have arrested the driver of the truck.”
