A motor accident has claimed the lives of four persons on the notorious Ikare- Ogbagi Akoko highway in Akoko North East Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Daily Trust learnt that the deadly crash occurred on Tuesday, resulting in the death of a motorcyclist and his two female passengers and an infant.

A source who witnessed the accident told reporters on Wednesday that the driver of an articulated truck loaded with gravel lost control of the wheels and rammed into the cyclist who was also on a high speed.

He revealed that the accident occurred on the failed portion of the road as the driver of the truck was trying to apply the break on the vehicle.

He further added that the remains of the deceased persons were moved to the hospital’s morgue by a combined effort of the police and local vigilante group in the area.

Samuel Ibitoye, the Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, could not be immediately reached for comments as of press time.

However, security sources who were part of the evacuation of the deceased from the road confirmed the accident to Daily Trust.

They blamed the ghastly auto crash on overspeeding.

 

Meanwhile, concerns residents in both Ikare and Ogbagi Akoko have raised an alarm over incessant accidents on the failed portion of the roads.

 

A few of them who spoke noted that the latest incident highlights the deteriorating condition of the road, which has been plagued by deep potholes, erosion, and poor drainage.

 

According to them, despite several fatal accidents and public outcry, the authorities have failed to address their plight and regulate heavy-duty vehicle movement.

 

A community leader, John Adetunji, who spoke on behalf of the indigenes, demanded an immediate action from the state government and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing.

 

“How many more lives must be lost before something is done on this notorious road that had claimed several lives?.

 

“We want an urgent rehabilitation of Ogbagi road to ensure safety for all users and enforcement of regulations on heavy-duty vehicle movement.

 

“We are also demanding installation of safety features such as speed bumps, streetlights, and proper signage,” he said.
