A combined team of army and State Security Service on June 6 commenced seizure and destruction of major newspapers (including Daily Trust) meant for different parts of the country, allegedly on ‘orders from above.’
In a press statement signed by weekend, Bala Kaigama and Musa Lawal, President and Secretary respectively, TUC descried the attacks on the “fourth estate of the realm as unwarranted, condemnable and shameful.”
TUC said any obstruction to free press will hamper good governance especially ahead of the 2015 general elections.
The union regretted that the incident is happening at a time of great insecurity in the country when 200 Nigerian girls are still being held by the Boko Haram sect and pledged to support the media.
“The media survived draconian legislations like Decrees 2 and 4 of 1984 and the jackboots of military dictatorship. It will yet survive and outlive the current siege and attempts to muzzle its voice.  And the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria celebrates this truth and stands shoulder to shoulder with the media on it,” they said.
