TUC moves to provide affordable houses

The scheme, which was launched over the weekend, is a collaboration by the TUC, Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and a private partner, Rock of Ages Limited.
President of the TUC Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama in his welcome address said it is unacceptable that in the country workers should retire from active service without a home of their own.
Kaigama maintained that workers must not wait until retirement to own a house, stressing that the need to provide housing for all informed the launch of the affordable housing programme, known as United Workers Housing Scheme.
“It has always been my conviction that every worker is entitled to quality shelter of his or her own. It is our right and an absolute necessity, not a luxury meant for only a privileged few. We are the engine room of the economy, so it is simply indefensible that any worker, least of all a senior staff, should be a perpetual tenant.”
He said the scheme involves millions of decent and affordable homes for senior public sector workers in all the 36 states and the FCT, but will however start with 100, 000 homes under the first phase of the project, 20, 000 houses to be located in the FCT in the first phase of construction.
Also speaking Minister of Labour and Productivity Emeka Wogu pledged government’s willingness to continue to provide necessary support through the provision of land and conducive environment.
“This mass housing is in line with President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda of providing quality and affordable housing for Nigerians, especially the workers. And this marks another milestone in that regard,” he said.
