The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has cautioned the public against malicious social media campaigns targeting prominent citizens, including former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki.
At a press conference on Thursday, HURIWA’s coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, drew attention to videos circulated online by Hadiza Musa Baffa, who was once placed under Turaki’s guardianship at her mother’s request.
“Unfortunately, instead of using the opportunity to build a promising future, reports indicate that she became entangled in conduct that created serious challenges for those who took her in. This eventually led to the termination of her guardianship and her return to her mother,” HURIWA said.
Onwubiko noted that Baffa had, at different times, described Turaki variously as her guardian, uncle, father, husband, and abuser-contradictions he said raised doubts about the credibility of her claims.
“The contradictions in these shifting identities are glaring and underscore the deliberate nature of the attempts to damage the integrity of a respected figure in Nigeria,” he said, calling for greater scrutiny of the misuse of social media.
Ms. Baffa did not respond to calls or a message sent to her on the matter.
