The gubernatorial crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Katsina State has deepened as aspirant Lawal Musa Daura rejected the party’s decision to assign him the Daura Senatorial District ticket, calling instead for a fresh process to determine the party’s governorship candidate.
Daura, a former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), insisted that he remains in the race for the governorship, despite the party’s consensus arrangement that produced Senator Ahmed Babba Kaita as the ADC candidate.
Speaking during a meeting with his supporters at the Munaj Event Centre in Katsina, Daura said his ambition is driven by a desire to rescue the state from the security and economic challenges that have bedeviled it for years.
According to him, Katsina requires capable leadership to address the growing insecurity and economic difficulties affecting residents across the state, adding that his concern for the people and his optimism for change are the driving forces behind his aspiration.
“Katsina State is in dire need of rescue—security-wise, economically, and in every other respect. We are indigenes of Katsina and we have what it takes to salvage and rescue our people; that is why we seek the people’s mandate,” he said.
The former DSS boss maintained that the public believes he possesses the experience and qualifications needed to lead the state, as well as to elevate its current socio-democratic status.
“I am qualified, even overqualified, for the position. My decision to seek the governorship is because of my love for Katsina and my desire to rescue my people,” he added.
Daura explained that he convened the meeting to update his supporters on developments surrounding the party’s consensus process, which had produced candidates for various elective positions.
He argued that the process failed to comply with both the provisions of the ADC constitution and the Electoral Act.
Consequently, the governorship aspirant urged the party leadership to either conduct a fresh consensus process acceptable to all stakeholders or organize an indirect primary election in line with the Electoral Act.
He further appealed to his supporters to remain calm, patient, and law-abiding while efforts continue to resolve the dispute and arrive at a mutually acceptable outcome.
