The deaths of the two men made irate youths in the area attempt to lynch the owner of the money, a petty trader popularly known as Mama Chibuzor. They claimed she had used them for ritual. A neighbour said: “Mama Chibuzor asked late Dominic to allow her to put his 6-year-old son in a bucket and used the rope of the fetcher to lower him into the well so that he could help her to remove the N1,000 naira she claimed fell into it.” Instead of allowing her to use his son to remove the money, Dominic volunteered to assist her. He entered it as usual but to our surprise, minutes later, he stopped communicating with us. That was not his first time entering the well, as he is said to be familiar with it. When he became quiet, Felix jumped into the well to rescue Dominic. “In less than 10 minutes, he too was silent, hence the confusion,” the neighbour explained.

Her account of the incident was corroborated by another tenant in the compound, Mrs. Rose Angwan. But  another account had it that Mama Chibuzor was fetching water from the well when the N1,000 note dropped into the well and offered a reward for its recovery. According to the source, Dominic jumped at the offer and plunged into the well.

When both men failed to come out of the well, Mama Chibuzor’s husband raised alarm that attracted neighbours who removed the victims to a nearby hospital where they were confirmed dead. The landlord of the house was later invited during the confusion. He, along with a Fulani man, in the presence of the crowd, removed the lifeless bodies of the two men.

When our correspondent visited the area, the property of the woman who narrowly escaped being lynched were seen in the front of her shop.

The spokesperson of the Kaduna State Police Command, DSP Aminu Lawan, confirmed the incident but said that the command was able to rescue the woman and her husband from being lynched. “Yes, we are aware of it. We quickly went into action when we were alerted about the attempted jungle justice and this is why we were able to save her,’’ he said.
