Two drown while fleeing phone snatchers in Kano

Two teenagers have lost their lives in Kano after falling into an open pond while trying to escape suspected phone snatchers.

Confirming the incident, the Kano State Fire Service said that the incident occurred on Friday, March 6, 2026, at Ring Road Kureken Sani in Kumbotso Local Government Area.

Spokesman of the Service, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said the victims identified as 18-year-old Sadiq Isyaku and Auwal Isyaku, were rescued unconscious, but later confirmed dead.

According to him, their remains were handed over to their father, Ibrahim Shehu, of Unguwa Uku Quarters.

Saminu said preliminary findings revealed that the teenagers were being pursued by suspected phone snatchers, when they accidentally fell into the pond.

In a separate incident on Monday, March 9, 2026, the Fire Service rescued a 40-year-old man, Shitu Balarabe, who fell into a well at Durumin Zungura in Kano Municipal.

He was retrieved alive and handed over to his brother, Jamilu Balarabe.

The Director of the Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, extended condolences to the bereaved families and urged residents to take preventive measures.

He advised communities to construct protective barriers around open water and provide covers for wells to avert similar tragedies.
