Two persons have been confirmed death in an auto crash around the Rumuola junction in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.
Residents of the area told newsmen that the occupants of the vehicle were returning from a club late on Sunday night, and they might have been intoxicated when the incident occurred.
They said their vehicle had collided with the intersection, while the road was deserted because of overspending.
A resident of the area said, “They were speeding while coming back from a club. The person driving did not negotiate the Rumuola roundabout properly.
“The vehicle hit the intersection, and one person died. The other person was hit by an oncoming vehicle when he went back to the car to pick something.
The Federal Road Safety Corps in Rivers State confirmed the accident, saying the crash was caused by overspending.
The Sector Commander of FRSC in Rivers State, Mr Umoh Inyang said the bodies of the two victims were evacuated by police operatives and taken to the mortuary.
He said the preliminary investigation showed that one vehicle rammed into another from behind while both were in motion.
He said, “Our men responded, but before we arrived, the police had already conducted the rescue and evacuated the deceased to the mortuary. Two persons were confirmed dead.
“Actually, neither of them died in the initial crash. One of them went back to pick something, maybe a charger, and in the process, he didn’t notice another vehicle coming. That vehicle struck him, which led to his death.
“My advice to the public is that, there is no need for excessive speeding. Your environment should guide your driving.
“Look at the Rumuola junction, it’s a sharp bend, yet some drivers are reckless, especially at night after drinking. These lives we are losing on the road are avoidable if simple rules are obeyed.
“If you are going to a club and know you will be drinking, do not get behind the wheel. Exercise caution and respect traffic regulations to prevent such tragic incidents.”
The FRSC boss also cautioned motorists against excessive speeding, stressing that most road crashes are avoidable if drivers comply with traffic regulations and exercise caution.
He also warned against driving under the influence of alcohol.
