Malawi’s U-20 women’s team has expressed determination to redeem themselves against Nigeria’s Falconets in the return-leg of the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
Malawi suffered a 2-0 defeat in the first-leg played at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State.
The Falconets secured victory after Malawi conceded two second-half goals — an own goal in the 46th minute and a 57th-minute strike by Kindness Ifeanyi — to boost Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup.
Speaking during the team’s last training session, Maggie Chombo, pointed out the mistakes made in the first leg, saying they cost her side a better result.
“We made just a silly mistake that caused us to concede the first goal. It was an own goal, but the second one, I think it was a communication problem between the two defenders,” she said.
She described the match as a difficult one and praised her players for their effort.
“But the game was really tough, and the girls played very well,” she added.
Ahead of the return leg on Saturday, April 9, the coach expressed optimism that her team could bounce back if they improve on their previous performance and correct the mistakes made in the first leg.
“We saw the mistakes we made in that game. In football, anything can happen. I’m sure if we prepare well and correct those mistakes, we can do better as well,” she said.
