U.S.-backed Syrian fighters on Friday declared victory over Islamic State in al-Raqqa, the former hub of the extremist militia’s self-styled Caliphate.

The Syrian Democratic Forces, (SDF) a Kurd-led alliance supported by the United States, said at a televised press conference in al-Raqqa that they are in full control of the city, ending a campaign that started in June.

The SDF said the al-Raqqa Civil Council would be in charge of the reconstruction of the city, which was devastated over the course of its liberation.
