United States forces carried out overnight airstrikes on two camps operated by Islamic State militants inside Libya, the Pentagon said on Thursday.
Pentagon spokesperson Peter Cook said the bombings were authorised by President Barack Obama and carried out “in conjunction with the Libyan Government of National Accord’’ against two camps about 45 kilometers south-west of Sirte.
“The Islamic State terrorists fled to the remote desert camps from Sirte in order to reorganise, and they posed a security threat to Libya, the region, and U.S. national interests,’’ Cook said.
The Pentagon’s initial assessment was that the strikes were successful, though evaluations were still under way, he said.
