UAD warns against illegal arrest, detention

The newly elected national convener of United Action for Democracy Barrister Gabriel Ojumah has warned the Federal and State government over disregarding the rule of law by using security agencies to arrest and detain people.

Speaking during a telephone chat with our correspondent yesterday, the Convener of UAD, Comrade Gabriel Ojumah also condemned the illegal appointment of caretaker by State Governors.

“Security agencies now arrest and detain people without observing the rule of law. Governors appoint illegal caretaker governments at the local levels just to siphon the allocations. We also declared that all the Governors must hands off the local governments now.”

Continuing, the group issued a two-month ultimatum to the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct all local government elections across the country. “UAD gives all state INEC two months to conduct all local government elections.”

On the release of Mr James Ibori, from British prison, and some subsequent celebration of his release by some Nigerians,he said that it is a reflection of the decadent level Nigeria as a country has fallen  into.

“ It is a shame that instead of celebrating great achievement, great scholars, and those that have contributed positively to the development of Nigeria, we now celebrate mediocrity and corruption. It is a societal problem as we have lost our value system. This is not peculiar to any tribe, ethnic group. It is therefore myopic for anybody who so ever to say that a particular tribe condoles or celebrates’ corruption”, he said.

Comrade Gabriel Ojumah  was elected the convener of UAD at the 10th national convention of UAD which took place in Lagos recently.
