Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid were the big winners on Tuesday night in their UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg matches.
Bayern trashed Atalanta 6-1 in Italy while Atletico trounced Tottenham Hotspurs 5-2 in Spain.
Bayern are one of the favourites to win this season’s UCL and they have continued to show their ruthlessness against the opposition, scoring thrice in 13 minutes of first half action through Josip Stanisic, Michael Olise, and Serge Gnabry.
Olise completed his brace in the second half after Nicholas Jackson added a fourth, and there was still time for Jamal Musiala to find the back of the net for the sixth goal.
The Bavarians are all but through to the quarter final round, with the second leg set for next week.
Atletco Madrid however profited from poor goalkeeping and defensive mistakes to go up by three goals within 16 minutes, Marcos Llorente, Antoine Griezman and Julio Alvarez scoring the first of his two goals. Robin Le Normand was also on the scoresheet on a night Ademola Lookman put on another excellent outing.
RESULTS
Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
Atletico Madrid 5-2 Tottenham
Newcastle United 1-1 Barcelona
Atalanta 1-6 Bayern Munich
