This led to over crowdedness in the campus, with inadequate facilities to take care of the population. As a result of that, the school authorities converted an unused library into a female hostel as part of measures to address the problem.
One year later, the management introduced ‘hall governors’. Hall governors are students selected by school authorities and assigned to check on students’ excesses in the hostels and report to the management any case of lawlesness.
Professor Adamu Aliero, the Dean of Student Affairs, who confirmed the introduction of the hall governors, said the students were selected by the students’ affairs division of the institution.
The chairman of the students’ union caretaker committee Comrade Al-amin Wushishi said that the reintroduction of the hall governors was part of the initiative of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) to ensure law and order in the hostels.
“Hall governors existed before and they still exist in other universities, therefore there is nothing wrong if UDUS reintroduces it,” he said.
However, the reintroduction of hall governors has generated a lot of reactions from students. While some are pleased with the development, others questioned the decision, calling for the position to be scrapped.
A biochemistry student, Ruqayya Musa, blamed the undemocratic process of selecting the governors, saying: “I do not see what qualities the hall governors possess that make them better than me. I think we should be allowed to choose or elect our hall governors.” 
She accused the governors of acting impolitely to their fellow students, asking: “What happens when they break the rules?”
Saliha Diri, a 300-level applied chemistry student said the introduction of the hall governors was unnecessary, adding: “We already have matrons and security guards who stay at the hostels and keep us in check. I do not see the need for the hall governors.
“The bathroom lights have spoilt for the past one month yet, nobody has done anything about it. What then is the essence of the hall governors?”
However, Mubarak Abdullahi, a 300-level student of statistics, said: “Most of the problems we had in our hostels were reported and solved by the hall governors. They help us communicate our grievances to the school authorities.”
