A Nigerian doctoral scholar, Ugochukwu Madu, has been recognized for excellence in teaching at the University of Iowa, United States, after receiving the prestigious John F. Murray Outstanding Doctoral Student in Teaching Award for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Madu, a doctoral candidate focusing on Health Communication at the university, formally received the award during the School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s end-of-year celebration held on May 5, where he was also presented with a Certificate of Recognition.

The award, presented annually to one outstanding doctoral Teaching Assistant and selected by the department’s graduate faculty, recognizes exceptional achievement in teaching, mentorship, student engagement, and dedication to student success.

Speaking after receiving the award, Madu described the recognition as a significant milestone in his academic journey.

“I’m deeply honored to have been selected by my department’s graduate faculty for this prestigious award. It recognizes my commitment to student learning, mentorship, and success over the past eight semesters as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Instructor of Record,” he said.

Madu dedicated the recognition to the hundreds of students he has taught and mentored during his time at the University of Iowa.

Originally from Nigeria, the scholar has built a reputation for academic excellence and student-centered teaching while pursuing his doctoral studies in the United States. His work has focused on creating meaningful learning experiences and supporting students both inside and outside the classroom.

Reflecting on the recognition, Madu noted that teaching remains one of the most rewarding aspects of academic life.

“Teaching and research are hallmarks of academia, and I’m grateful that my work in both areas is being recognized and supported,” he added.
The John F. Murray Outstanding Doctoral Student in Teaching Award is regarded as one of the department’s highest honors for doctoral students who have made significant contributions to teaching and student success.
