Disclosing this while briefing journalists shortly after conducting members of the Governing Council of the University, led by their Chairman, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), round the location of the proposed road linking the University main Campus with the Ajibode Second Phase site, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Olufemi Bamiro commended the Federal Government for the gesture, pledging that the fund would be used for the purpose it was meant.
The Vice Chancellor remarked that the N1.3billion was approved to the University following the successful presentation of the need for the institution to embark on timely development of the new site to enable the University meet up with the challenges ahead.
He explained that the N1.3billion would be directed towards the building of infrastructures at the planned Second Phase of the University as well as for the provision of other necessary amenities required for the expansion of the new Ajibode Campus which comprises 550hectares of land.
While maintaining that the Second Phase site is expected to house most of the institution’s Post Graduate schools, the proposed University of Ibadan School of Business as well as hostels, the Vice Chancellor noted with concern that the University of Ibadan with student population of over 20,000 can only accommodate 10,000 of the students presently due to the in availability of adequate space for the building of more hostels, hence the urgent need of the planned expansion project.
Professor Bamiro further told journalists that the reality on ground presently showed that the University had already exhausted all the lands available at the First Phase of the institution which was opened up in 1948, thus necessitating the need for the expansion to Ajibode Second Phase site.
He then called for collaborations in this regard from private bodies, Corporate organisations and well meaning members of the society saying that such assistance would go a long way in ensuring the timely completion of the Second Phase project of the University in line with the modern trend.
The Chairman of the Governing Council and Pro-Chancellor of the University, Chief Olanipekun (SAN) stated in his remarks after inspection of the new site that the contractors handling the 2.7kilometre road that would link the University of Ibadan Campus with the Ajibode Extension would be fully mobilised to ensure timely completion of the road project.
