Nusrat Ghani has become the first female Muslim minister to speak at the Commons despatch box.

Ms Ghani, who is the daughter of Pakistani immigrants, was promoted by Theresa May in last week’s reshuffle. She has been Wealden MP since 2015. Recently appointed as Transport Minister, Ms Ghani was cheered as she addressed questions about station access for disabled people. Speaking about the milestone, Ms Ghani said it was an “important moment”.

“I hope that today, young people can see that regardless of their background, heritage or faith, there will be a warm welcome on the green benches – and no matter where you are from, you can achieve your dreams and ambitions,” she said.
