Muslim leaders in the United Kingdom have called for unity on April 3 after letters inciting violence were delivered across the country.

Extra police patrols will be out in force to offer reassurance in multi-cultural communities and outside mosques in Nottinghamshire on the day in question.

The offensive messages titled ‘Punish a Muslim Day’ were sent to a number of locations across the country.

The leaflet lists a number of violent acts to carry out against Muslims, and designates the day of April 3 to carry them out.

Nottinghamshire Police said that no letters had been received in the county but that they would be offering reassurance on the day.

Around 28 groups and organisations across Nottinghamshire have endorsed a statement calling for unity.

They include the Nottingham Muslim Women’s Network, Muslim Voice Group Nottingham and Nottingham Together.

The statement from the Muslim Community of Nottinghamshire said: “Nottinghamshire is celebrated as a place where people get along. Therefore, the letters inciting violence against the Muslim community on the April 3 are not just an attack on Muslims but an attack on the values underpinning our diverse and tolerant society.

“Muslim community leaders are liaising with the local police, councils and community organisations across Nottinghamshire and full support will be given in relation to this issue.” (Nottingham Post)
