The United Labour Congress of Nigeria (ULC) has given the federal government a two-week ultimatum  to honour its 2009 agreement with university lecturers under the umbrella of  Academic Staff  Union of Universities, ASUU, and  re-open the universities.

ULC, in a communiqué issued at the end of  its Central Working Committee meeting held in Lagos at the weekend warned that failure by the government to meet the ultimatum, ULC shall embark on industrial actions that would force government to correct itself and respect the interests of workers and the citizenry. 

The communiqué signed by the union national president, Joe Ajaero, also demanded  the  immediate inauguration of the national minimum wage committee, immediate inclusion of all representatives of labour in the various committees, agencies and directorates of government,  immediate release of the union’s registration certificate. 

He said, “We demand immediate payment of all the arrears of salaries owed Nigerian workers at all levels of government without exception as well as immediate repairs of all roads leading to the petroleum refineries and depots.’’ 

“While we  rejoice the return of President Muhammadu Buhari, we are filled with great expectations and unfulfilled promises and hope that the rejuvenated President will hit the ground running in ensuring that the nation’s economy and society in general makes progress from where it is now,” he said.
