He brought vibrancy to the Second Republic and made many enemies amongst his party and other political parties in the country. When the Shagari government was overthrown in 1981, the army rulers considered Dr Umaru Dikko to be a threat to their continued stay in power because of his vocal attacks on them and the allegation that he corruptly enriched himself while he was minister.
This development led to the attempt to kidnap him in London where he lived, and put inside a crate to be transported to Nigeria. Also late Dr Umaru Dikko would be remembered for his pronouncement during Second Republic that no Nigerian was eating from dustbin and therefore Nigerians could not be classified as hungry people, attracting criticism across the country.
History has shown that late Umar Dikko did not soil his hand with ill-gotten wealth as testify by his close friends and associates that when he was out of office, he sustained himself through the benevolence of friends.
May almighty Allah grant the soul of Dr Umaru Dikko eternal rest in Aljanah Firdausi.
