United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Dr. Amina Mohammed, has urged Nigerian and African leaders to build inclusive economies by increasing investment in critical sectors such as energy and the digital economy.
Speaking as a guest speaker at the 18th Annual LEADERSHIP Conference and Awards in Abuja on Thursday, Mohammed said sustainable peace and development depend on investing in people and the environment.
“If you want sustainable peace, then we have to invest in the people, we have to invest in the environment,” she said.
She called for stronger African unity to confront political instability and navigate an increasingly competitive global landscape.
According to her, many of Africa’s crises stem not only from external pressures but also from internal contradictions that hinder development.
“African unity is important; we must fix the African Union,” she said, noting that the continent already possesses the tools to drive growth.
She also emphasised the need to strengthen climate resilience and promote climate-smart agriculture.
Mohammed affirmed the UN’s readiness to support Africa’s development agenda, particularly in empowering women and youth through the digital economy, adding that Nigeria is taking a leading role in that sector.
She also paid tribute to the late Sam Nda-Isaiah, founding chairman of LEADERSHIP Media Group, for advancing press freedom in Nigeria.
In her remarks, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu said Nigeria cannot thrive without unity.
The first lady, who received the ‘LEADERSHIP Person of the Year 2025’ award at the event, urged citizens to bridge political, ethnic and religious divides.
“The future of our nation depends on our willingness to work together across cultural and religious differences and interests for the good of all. For a house divided against itself cannot stand,” she said.
She urged Nigerians to continue working together to realise the Nigeria of their dreams.
