Mrs. Glory Ekah Effiong, the Executive Chairman of Ibeno Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, is set to be honoured with the International Peace Medal Award by the International Organization of United Nations Peace Volunteers.

The recognition comes in commemoration of the United Nations International Day for Living Together in Peace, observed globally on May 16.

The award, which will be presented on Monday, May 19, 2025, in Ibeno, celebrates Effiong’s extraordinary commitment to peacebuilding, humanitarian support, and impactful leadership in a region long affected by communal boundary conflicts. The International Organization of UN Peace Volunteers described her as an “exemplary recipient” whose dedication has left “an indelible mark on humanity.”

“It is with great honour that we write to inform you that you have been selected for a special Recognition and Presentation of the International Peace Medal Award as a Global Peace Diplomat,” the organization stated in a formal letter signed by its International Director of Volunteer Affairs, Amb. Luke Jacob, and Director of Program Affairs, Dr. Yahaya Salisu.

The United Nations Peace & Living Together Day serves as a global call to action, encouraging people of all nations to embrace peace, tolerance, and coexistence. According to the organizers, Hon. Effiong’s leadership perfectly aligns with the ideals the day seeks to uphold.

“This day aims to promote peace, tolerance and cooperation and also serves as a reminder of the importance of living together in harmony and working towards a more peaceful world,” the letter continued. “We believe that your tireless efforts and unwavering dedication… make you an exemplary recipient of this honour.”

Under Effiong’s leadership, Ibeno LGA has witnessed significant strides in both peacekeeping and humanitarian services. She has led efforts to rebuild homes destroyed in clashes and ensured the payment of medical bills for victims, reinforcing her administration’s commitment to healing and reconciliation.

Her impact extends beyond crisis response. She has also driven development projects aimed at improving the quality of life for Ibeno residents. Notable among them are the construction of the 1.5-kilometre Mkpanak Road and the erection of a two-storey administrative building, the first of its kind in the area.

“Your legacy will continue to inspire future generations to pursue peace, tolerance, and mutual respect,” the letter noted, emphasizing the global relevance of Effiong’s work in local governance. “We hope it brings pride to your loved ones, knowing that your work will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.”

As part of the award presentation, the International Organization of UN Peace Volunteers will officially install Hon. Effiong as a “Global Peace Diplomat.” The ceremony is expected to attract dignitaries and community leaders in recognition of her unique contributions to stability and coexistence in Ibeno.
