UN team hails Nasarawa lands project

The team, led by Salisu Dahiru, National Coordinator of the programme was at the operations office of the Nasarawa Geographic Information Service (NAGIS) in Mararaba, the gateway to Abuja as part of the assessment of the capacity of the state to implement the programme of forest reservation.
 Cross River was selected a pilot state in 2010. The programme has received applications from Nasarawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Delta, Ekiti, Ondo, and Lagos, with the technical team visiting as a strategy to engage two more states.
Haddy J. Sey, World Bank Senior Social Development specialist, who is also a specialist on Carbon Finance expressed delight with the deployment of a sophisticated technology which has brought all of the landscape of Nasarawa, covering 27,300 square kilometres into digital maps, and stored in the data base for various uses.
The NAGIS project partners, including the state commissioner of lands and urban development, Sonny Agassi, and the Project Manager, Alhaji Ibrahim Usman Jibril, Roland Klaus, General Manager of GIS Transport, a GIS specialist, Heiko Howy, and Peter Ritchie, a senior Marketing Consultant conducted the UN-REDD team round he facility.
 The team was taken through the data base which has maps showing the land cover including forests and other natural endowments in the state.
