A 34-year-old unemployed man, Emeka Ndobu, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing a phone worth N48, 000 and N420,000 cash from a shop.

Ndobu, who resides in Ipaja, area of Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and stealing.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Police Prosecutor, ASP Clifford Ogu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Feb. 2 at Ikeja, Lagos.

Ogu said that the defendant stole the phone and cash from the complainant, Mrs Anthonia Aluya.

“The defendant entered the complainant’s shop and stole her Samsung J7 phone valued N48, 000 and N420,000 totalling N468,000,’’ he said.

Ogu said that the phone was tracked to Ugochukwu Emeburu, who confessed that the defendant sold it to him.

The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 attracts three years for stealing, while Section 411 prescribes two years jail term for conspiracy.

The Magistrate, Mr J.A Adegun, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Adegun said that the surety should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until May 13. (NAN)
