Against the backdrop of the high unemployment rate in the country, the Lagos State coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr Eddy Megwa, has called on corps members to acquire entrepreneurial skills to help them be to be self-reliant.
He urged those who are yet to key into the skills and entrepreneurship platform of the scheme to do so, to enhance their self-reliance by acquiring skills.
Megwa, who spoke yesterday during a low-key passing-out certificate distribution to 1, 188 corps members of the 2020 Batch ‘B’ Stream II, at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Lagos, disclosed that after a post mortem conducted on the corps members, about 30 per cent of those passing out have the small-scale businesses that can aid them financially during economic hardship and before being gainfully employed.
This figure, according to Megwa, is a testament to the efforts on the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme of the NYSC.
He urged other corps members to take advantage of the NYSC in-camp and outside-camp Skill Acquisition training to be self-reliant.
Out of the 1,188 corps members who passed out, the state coordinator mentioned that five erred; three were slammed with the extension of service year on offenses related and commensurate to the punishment, while two would be re-mobilized for service after absconding from service.
