The Executive Director of AID Foundation, Mr. Bonet Emmanuel has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to restructure the intervention programmes of agencies like  Industrial Training Fund (ITF), National Directorate of Employment (NDE) and  National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) to address the prevailing high rate of unemployment in the country.

Speaking at the Kaduna State Stakeholders’ forum on youth employment and empowerment programmes organised by Aid Foundation in collaboration with Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme (NSRP), Bonet advised that the redesigning of the programmes should  be done in a way that will show value for money and take unemployed youths off the streets.
“ITF has told us that they train over two million people annually, where and who are the two million and how many people have the Fund trained since its existence in 1971. There is need for government to redesign ITF to show value for money, because the rate of unemployment is increasing drastically, as such these programmes must be re-evaluated again.
“If money is being doled out and people are being trained but it is not impacting on the population because there are lots of unemployed youths out there; then, it means something is wrong, as such, government must call all stakeholders together to ask fundamental questions in order to change the way things are done so as to get the desired results,” he said.
He recalled that there is a partnership between Kaduna State government and NSRP to develop a blueprint on how to create employment and empower the youths, adding that the stakeholder’s forum was aimed at connecting the unemployed youths and Kaduna State government.
