Unemployment: Olam seals pact on dairy farming

The Kano State Government, through one of its establishments, the Kano Dairy and Cooperative Union, has signed a pact with Outspan Nigeria Ltd, a diary arm of Olam Nigeria Limited, with a view to engaging no fewer than 12,000 farmers in the sector.

A Memorandum of Understanding signed in Kano by Praveen Paulsamy, head of Olam Dairy, and Alhaji Usman Abdullahi, the chairman, Kano Dairy Cooperative Union, was aimed at reducing poverty and unemployment rate in the country.

Speaking at the event, both parties expressed readiness to work together, saying dairy farmers would be supported by ensuring that milk production in terms of regularity is enhanced and the pricing of same is fair and equitable, as well as its sustainability.

The Olam Group, an agri-business and food company, has been present in Nigeria in the last 30 years.

Paulsamy added that it would also help facilitate the setting up of educational initiatives under a Dairy Development Programme (DDP), which will house numerous topics in its curriculum, including lifecycle management, water management, feed management and artificial insemination.
