The Senate is considering the introduction of a 3-month mandatory entrepreneurship training for Nigerian graduates to address the growing unemployment rate in the country.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Senator Aliyu Wamakko (APC, Sokoto) stated this during a public hearing on innovative education technology, e-learning and blended learning in the education sector.

He said the introduction of the programme would massively reduce unemployment among Nigerian graduates as done in other countries.

Declaring open the public hearing, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, represented by the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan said the objective of providing the most resourceful and effective instructional experience in the nation’s educational system called for the adoption of conventional and innovative methods of pedagogy.

 "In a world where the dynamics of learning are constantly evolving, the measure of competence, and expected outcome of learning, have gone beyond mere skills to include the attitudes and stamina needed to execute necessary tasks," he said.

In his submission, JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, cautioned the Senate against merging innovative education with e-learning.

He advised that the country should emulate the Indian and Singaporean models in the introduction of entrepreneurship training.
