Former health minister and current head of the United Nations Population Fund, Babatunde Osotimehin, is dead.
He died in the early hours of Monday morning, aged 68, a release from the UNFPA has confirmed.
He also was a former head of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), a position he occupied before becoming head of the UNFPA in 2010 and reappointed in 2014.
Details are still emerging, but a transition statement quoting a relative Babajide Osotimehin says the family will announce his burial arrangements soon.
Already his death has sparked tributes from health journalists who have worked with him from the years when he was Nigeria’s health minister.
One of the journalists working with Nigeria’s state television said on a whatsapp group for health journalists: “I just opened my mail and I quickly called….I was in her office as early as 8am and I didn’t even know, not to talk of condole her.”
