The Minister of State for Environment, Dr Iziaq Salako, is participating in the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, where he is seeking strategic partnerships and bilateral collaborations on climate change actions.
The minister will also update the global community on Nigeria’s efforts at climate change mitigation and adaptation.
According to a statement by Mr Haruna Ibrahim, Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Environment, issued Tuesday, Salako will represent President Tinubu at the high-level for Nature and People meeting to demonstrate Nigeria’s leading role in Africa on the conservation and sustainable use of “marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (high seas).”
The statement reads in part: “The minister will also participate in the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Ambition Summit to join other world leaders to talk about key climate actions, targets and milestones like nationally determined contributions, energy transition plans, fossil fuel phase-out plans, renewable energy targets and economic wide plans on climate adaptation and resilience.

“In addition, Minister Salako is scheduled to participate in the Commonwealth Ministers of Environment and Climate Meeting, High Ambition for the High Seas, High-Level Event on Building Economies for the Future and similar multilateral high-level events.”
Ibrahim further explained that the minister would also hold bilateral meetings with colleague ministers from other countries and development partners under the purview of environment and climate change.
The statement quoted Salako as saying that he would focus on mobilising more international support for the ambitious climate agenda of President Tinubu to end the super-dependence of Nigeria on fossil fuel.
