According to UNHCR, the immediate priorities for Nigeria are to protect and assist most vulnerable groups among the IDPs and host communities
Speaking at a press conference, UNHCR regional representative said “it is a huge task to receive and assist more than 1.4 million IDPs.
“Over 95% of them are in homes, which means host communities are extremely generous to share with these unfortunate people their resources, shelter and food,” the agency said. It also plans to expand its programme on trauma support for IDPs amidst concerns that up to five million people may be indirectly traumatised in the wake of the conflict.
Since it first launched its appeal for funding, the agency has received only 9% of what it needs to see to IDPs, leaving a 91% funding gap.
UNHCR, which targeted 13,000 households – 65,000 most vulnerable IDPs among them – in Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe and Yobe in its latest distribution of non-food items, also raised concern about nearly 200,000 Nigerian refugees in Cameroon.
