The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, now Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the appointment of Prof. Muhammad Umaru Ndagi as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration.

The announcement was contained in a statement by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Habib Yakoob, following the council’s 82nd extraordinary meeting held on February 13.

Prof Ndagi, a distinguished scholar of Arabic Linguistics in the Department of Arabic, brings to the role over 45 years of teaching and academic leadership.

He has previously served as Dean, Faculty of Arts and Deputy Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

Beyond academia, Ndagi is widely recognised for his contributions to public discourse as a longtime columnist with the Daily Trust newspaper and a member of its editorial board, where his writings have shaped national conversations on education, language, and culture.

His appointment, ratified alongside that of Prof. Rosemary Udeozor as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, underscores the university’s commitment to drawing on seasoned intellectuals with both academic and public engagement credentials.

Prof. Ndagi holds degrees from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the International Institute for Arabic Language, Khartoum. He is a Fellow of Arabic Studies in Nigeria and has contributed extensively to language policy initiatives and scholarly publications.

In his acceptance speech, Ndagi pledged to support the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, in advancing the institution’s strategic direction.
