The Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University, formerly University of Abuja, has approved the promotion of 104 academic staff to professorial rank, the largest in the institution’s history.
Dr. Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of Information and University Relations, in a statement, said the decision was taken at the Council’s 78th Extraordinary Meeting held on September 9 and 10, 2025, at the main campus.
Of the beneficiaries, 58 were promoted to full professor, while 46 advanced to associate professor. The promotions cut across various disciplines, including agriculture, engineering, clinical sciences, Islamic studies, theatre arts, and allied health sciences.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mathew Adamu, congratulated the new professors, describing the exercise as a milestone. He commended their commitment to scholarship, research, and community service, urging them to build on their achievements.
