‘UniAbuja needs more infrastructure, academic upgrade’

The Vice Chancellor of University of Abuja, Professor Michael Adikwu, has called for more funding for the university saying it deserves special attention especially in the area of infrastructural development, academic upgrade and the employment of requisite number of personnel.
Professor Adikwu who made the declaration in Abuja, while receiving visiting members of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETfund led by its chairman, Senator Barau Jibrin, said the varsity deserved more as an institution located in the Federal Capital Territory, a statement from the varsity said.
He said the university was faced with many developmental challenges which were attributable in a large part to the fact that it did not benefit from a take-off grant from the federal government.
He said: “At the inception of the present administration, we embarked on the rehabilitation of physical facilities at both campuses under the NEEDS intervention programme to make learning more conducive. The effort has paid off as the structures now wear new look and could stand the test of time for a few more years to come.’’
The Senate committee chairman, Jibrin Barau, said the committee was conversant with the problems the university was facing from the presentations mode before it and that they were there to see some of the projects physically.
UniAbuja, according to him, should rise to the status of the FCT and serve as model.
“The committee will do all in its power to see that uniAbuja attains the status of an institution befitting the nation’s capital,”he said.
