UniAbuja students get Chinese scholarships

Forty-nine students of the University of Abuja have received an award of scholarship from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria.

The scholarship was part of what the embassy called the Chinese Embassy October scholarship awards and part of its activities to cement the relationship between China and Nigeria.

Speaking during the ceremony held at the Main Campus of the institution, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor AbdulRasheed Na’allah disclosed that the awardees cut across various faculties and have distinguished themselves in their course of study.

He said many criteria were employed in deciding the applicants worthy of the scholarships, adding that the dean of students did a rigorous exercise to decide who is worthy to be given the scholarship.

He also urged the students to develop good character in addition to their academic knowledge as the university is serious about the academic and character of its products.

The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Cui Jianchun said while the world is focused on COVID-19, climate change among others, China is focused on building relationships to solve these challenges.

On the railway programme he said the plan was to have young people develop special skills in the sector, adding that the Chinese company driving the railway sector in Nigeria have a workshop in China and they are working to establish one in Nigeria and the University of Abuja and be the ideal host to assist the students develop their skills.
