He said it was for the good of the students and that the fees would be paid upon their graduation.
Prof. Adikwu said this in Abuja while briefing newsmen during his one-year anniversary in office.
He said the management discovered that most PGD students were not serious with their studies and usually stayed longer than necessary.
“We decided to charge a fee that is high, that will force them to graduate quickly, but we reconsidered because some are poor and we agreed that paying for their graduation fee is essential,” he said.
He also explained that the move was also to check corruption in the institution, adding that it was realised that students paid money through lecturers and the department who later apply to the university.
Prof Adikwu meanwhile, has scored the university’s administration high in the area of physical projects in his last one year in office, saying that there are about 15 projects of various shapes catering for many segments being undertaken in partnership with TETFund, Central Bank of Nigeria, Needs Assessment Committee, PTDF among others.
“The completion of the projects will no doubt add pep to the drive for the realisation of our objectives,” he said.
The don admitted that funding had slowed down the pace of physical development and improvements on power and water supply but noted that the institution with collaborative efforts with the public private partnerships will overcome the financial crunch.
He said his one-year in office has been eventful as he was able to address grievances within the university’s system prior to his assumption of office on 1st July, 2014.
Some off the issues included students protest over denial of their entitlements, stagnation of staff promotion and accreditation of academic programme which have all been addressed.
