Prof. Paul Otasowie of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, University of Benin, has been shot dead by gunmen in Oredo Local Government of Edo State.
It was gathered that the professor was shot in front of his residence on Ekehuan road on Wednesday evening.
It was also learnt that nothing was taken from him by the gunmen after the killing.
The spokesman of the institution, Michael Osasuyi, who confirmed the incident, said they are trying to gather the right information as they are getting different versions.
“The first version said it was an assassination, while the second said it was armed robbery; that he was inside a car when they shot him.”
He described the death as a huge loss to the university community, adding that the deceased was a dedicated staff.
He said the level of insecurity in the state is now at an alarming rate and called on the security agencies to address the situation.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Moses Nkombe, who also confirmed the killing, said policemen on patrol found him dead, adding that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
“Nothing was taken from him after the killing. The perpetrators would be brought to book,” he said.
