The Vice chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Faraday Orumwense, has promised to renovate all the dilapidated hostels in the institution.
The Vice Chancellor made the remark shortly after inspecting the hostels in company of other principal officers recently. He said action was being taken to renovate the decaying hostels and facilities.
The team, which inspected the Akanu Ibiam Halls of residence popularly called Hall-4, decried the state of the hostel.
He said “the university is an institution of learning. Apart from learning facilities, there are other things to put in place. The hostels are among such facilities. Since the inception of this present administration we have been poised to carry out a total revamp of the school hostels and that is what we are doing presently.
“I can attest to the fact that this hostel isn’t conducive but I don’t stay in the hostels, students are the ones who stay there. They have to keep their hostel clean always. Use the bathroom appropriately, place the dirt in the waste bin, and use the sporting equipment properly and everything would be in place. It is not about changing the facilities in the hostels but the ability to maintain them when they are installed.”
The university’s Public Relations officer, Mr. Michael Osayuki, said the visit was meant to address the major difficulties the students might be facing, adding that the VC had promised to take actions in renovating the decaying hostels.
